GROUP NEWS

KEEP YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS COMING.
We do not have recent photos representing all the walks. I am sure people have been taking pictures in all the lovely weather we have been enjoying.

2010 Annual Meeting
Will take place on Friday 12th November at 7.30 pm.
At the Eric Lefevre Catholic Church Hall on Bradford Road, Burley-in-Wharfedale.

Usual business meeting, followed by social time.

We have changed our venue simply because we are getting more people to the AGM than we could fit in - it is a good reason to have to move!
LATEST FACTS AND FIGURES ON WALKING.
According to Britain’s most comprehensive survey of sport and recreation, 9.1 million adults in England, or 22% of the population, walk recreationally on a regular basis. That's almost twice the number that swim, more than twice the number that go to the gym and nearly three times the number that cycle. And people’s attitudes to walking are very positive: 73% of adults agree that pedestrians should be given more priority. 97% believe we should be encouraged to walk more to improve health, 94% to improve the environment and 92% to ease congestion. Yet the overall decline of walking, with a reduction in the proportion of walking trips from over a third to under a quarter since 1986, still needs to be reversed if we are to achieve a healthier and more sustainable Britain - and there’s still a significant gap between rich and poor and between white and non-white people when it comes to healthier, active lifestyles.
FROM RAMBLER’S HEAD OFFICE
We are now known as ‘the Ramblers’. So ‘RA’, ‘The Ramblers’, and ‘The Ramblers Association’ will no longer be used. There is further explanation about this on the Ramblers national web site.

Ramblers manifesto
Out of all the candidates standing for election who signed up to the Ramblers Manifesto 115 were subsequently elected to Parliament – that’s 1 in 5 of all MPs, including two party leaders! A full list of all supportive MPs can be found on the Ramblers Campaign WebPages, together with a map showing their constituencies, as well as more information about the campaign.

Our aim is for 50 per cent of those candidates who signed up, and were subsequently elected, to meet with local Ramblers volunteers in their first 5 months after election.  We now know that this translates to 58 MPs. Anything you can do to help us reach this aim.
'Beeching' axe for our rights of way?
Ramblers' latest campaign, against ‘rationalisation by neglect’, launched earlier this month. with our Beeching Appeal. In a situation reminiscent of Dr Beeching’s rationalisation of the railways, valued paths everywhere are at risk of neglect and even closure, caused by the failing prioritisation systems adopted by many highway authorities, together with huge budget cuts faced by local authorities. The Ramblers is determined to lead the fight against rationalisation by neglect, but we need your help to do this. To help us identify where direct action is needed to tackle path neglect, we're asking anyone concerned about local path prioritisation and budget cuts in their area to contact us at:

SUCCESS!
The Marine and Coastal Access Bill received the Royal Assent on Thursday 12th November 2009. There will still be lot to do as agreed paths are developed around the whole coast of Britain. It also means protection for marine life off some areas of the coast.

There are public transport links across the Yorkshire Dales by bus and train. There are special services on Sundays and bank Holidays. The buses accept concessionary free passes.

75th Anniversary Year

The walker who went in front of the Leader
Are you a volunteer, member or campaigner with the Ramblers? Tell Ramblers head office your story and they will feature you on the 75th anniversary microsite. Email your stories, anecdotes, comments by email to 75anniversary@ramblers.org.uk - they'd love to hear from you.

The Ramblers national web site has been changed to create a new area for volunteers. That means all committee members, walk leaders, working groups and anyone else actively involved in maintaining and developing walking and our use of Rights of Way.

The Ramblers is trying hard to minimise the use of paper in its communications so that now there is a new part of the national web site that will contain all circulars, newsletters, bulletins, handbooks, fact sheets and resources. Go to:
www.ramblers.org.uk/volunteer. Just click this link.

NEW RAMBLERS GUIDES ARE HERE!
In partnership with Collins books the Ramblers have produced a series of new regional walking guides. Each book has guided routes that are illustrated with OS maps and stunning colour photographs. There are two collections currently in circulation: the first includes 30 walks which are colour coded to demonstrate levels of difficulty, and the second collection contains 20 shorter walks, each being completed in 3 hours or less. To purchase one or all of the books, please visit the Ramblers bookshop where the Ramblers receive a share of the profits from every sale.
