GROUP NEWS
KEEP YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS COMING.
We do not have recent photos representing all the walks. I am sure people have been taking pictures in all the lovely weather we have been enjoying.
2011 Annual Meeting was held on the 11th November
at 7.30 pm at the Catholic Church Hall on Bradford Road, Burley-in-Wharfedale.
49 people attended the meeting to receive the accounts and the officer’s reports for the year. At the end of the formal business the Group shared a social time over cheese and wine.
If you would like a copy of the minutes or the Reports booklet please contact David, the Group secretary.
LATEST FACTS AND FIGURES ON WALKING.
According to Britain’s most comprehensive survey of sport and recreation, 9.1 million adults in England, or 22% of the population, walk recreationally on a regular basis. That's almost twice the number that swim, more than twice the number that go to the gym and nearly three times the number that cycle. And people’s attitudes to walking are very positive: 73% of adults agree that pedestrians should be given more priority. 97% believe we should be encouraged to walk more to improve health, 94% to improve the environment and 92% to ease congestion. Yet the overall decline of walking, with a reduction in the proportion of walking trips from over a third to under a quarter since 1986, still needs to be reversed if we are to achieve a healthier and more sustainable Britain - and there’s still a significant gap between rich and poor and between white and non-white people when it comes to healthier, active lifestyles.
FROM RAMBLERS HEAD OFFICE
There are a number of campaigns running at the moment. They are all important in maintaining the best in walking and ensuring the safety of walkers all over the country.
The 999 appeal to Emergency Services
Recent Ramblers research has uncovered situations where ambulances have been delayed because of a lack of software or training to interpret grid reference locations. In remote areas where postcodes do not give accurate locations and without any nearby towns or landmarks, grid reference locations are essential in locating people in an emergency.
Visit the relevant page on the national website to learn more and take action to help. Click here: 999: It’s an Emergency

DALES BUS. There are public transport links across the Yorkshire Dales by bus and train. There is now a winter timetable. The buses accept concessionary free passes. Find out more on the web at www.dalesbus.org. You can simply click on this site address to go to their web site. Alternatively David can email a PDF of the most recent timetables for our area to you.
The C Group are very strict about keeping to the ‘rules’.
Remember that the Burley Bridge Association are still working hard to get a bridge across the Wharfe at the Burley-in-Wharfedale stepping stones. They are always looking for supporters and helpers. If you live in the area and want to support them go onto their web site.
Find out more about this work within our area to improve valued footpaths. Click on the picture to the right.
Remember that your concerns about any footpaths in our area can reported to Richard, our Footpaths Officer. He will do his best to find out whether problems can be solved and the standard of paths maintained.

Did you know that toner and inkjet printer cartridges and old mobile phones - can be recycled to raise valuable funds for the Ramblers?
The Ramblers is partnered with the Recycling Appeal in an environmentally friendly fundraising scheme. Every time* you donate a cartridge or old mobile phone to our Recycling Appeal, the Ramblers will earn cash to support our charitable objectives.

The Ramblers national web site has been changed to create a new area for volunteers. That means all committee members, walk leaders, working groups and anyone else actively involved in maintaining and developing walking and our use of Rights of Way.
The Ramblers is trying hard to minimise the use of paper in its communications so that now there is a new part of the national web site that will contain all circulars, newsletters, bulletins, handbooks, fact sheets and resources. Go to:

URGENT - Coastal Access - Sinking Fast?
Thanks to the hard work of committed Ramblers’ volunteers, the Marine and Coastal
Access Act was passed in 2009. This legislation allows for the designation of a continuous
route for walkers along the entire coast of England. It is becoming clear that the
Government does not view coastal access as a priority, and indeed, might delay indefinitely
the designation of the new route.
This June, DEFRA, the department responsible for the environment, published a White
Paper laying out the Government’s vision for the natural environment. Shockingly,
this paper doesn’t mention the future of coastal access.
ACTION: We are calling on all Ramblers members to write to their MP to ask for their
support for the designation of the England coastal route. You can find suggested
text for a letter on line, however, it would be most effective to write the letter
in your own words.
Click on web address below for suggested text and more information: http://www.ramblers.org.uk/Volunteer/News/coastal+access+camp aigning
****Please note that it is important to ask your MP to copy your letter to the relevant
Minister (Richard Benyon MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Natural Environment
and Fisheries at DEFRA). He is the person who has the power to say whether Natural
England can carry on with their work. *****
